How To Add Volume To Hair For Men?

Keeping your hair looking full and lustrous requires a combination of the right products and a good hair routine.

Because everyone’s hair is different, you may need to try a few different volumizing products to find one that works for you. It’s also important that you first deal with any underlying hair problems such as dry scalp or thin hair before trying to add volume to it.

A Good Routine Keeps Your Hair Healthy And Full

A Good Routine Keeps Your Hair Healthy And Full

The best and most expensive volumizing hair products will not help if you don’t take good care of your hair.

If your hair appears thin and flat, it’s likely you are not taking proper care of it. While a good routine will not give you the full volume you are looking for, it’ll get you halfway there.

Here’s a good hair care routine that you can follow.

1. Wash Your Hair 2-3 Times a Week

One of the most common reasons for flat and matted hair is a buildup of oils and dirt. They weigh down on the hair, causing it to appear thinner and duller.

Washing your hair at least 2-3 times a week gets rid of this build-up, making your hair appear fuller and livelier.

Use a good shampoo when washing your hair. And since our goal here is to add volume to hair, you might as well use a volumizing shampoo.

If you only want to add a little bit of volume to your hair, that might be enough.

Tip: On the days you don’t wash your hair, you can rinse it with warm (not hot) water.

2. Use a Conditioner

A shampoo cleans your hair. A conditioner protects your hair and makes it easier to style and add volume to.

You can use a rinse-out conditioner or a leave-in conditioner. As with the shampoo, look specifically for a volumizing conditioner. It’ll not give you as much volume as a mousse or volumizing spray, but it’ll give you a headstart.

3. Go Easy on Your Hair

Whether you are washing your hair, drying it with a towel or combing it, be as gentle as possible. The few strands of hair you leave on the com may not seem like much, but over time, you are losing a lot of hair.

Handling your hair roughly thins it out and can also damage your scalp, which can affect the look and health of your hair.

4. Moisturize Your Hair

Never let your hair get dry. It’ll get weak and damaged. It’ll also appear thinner and flatter.

Moisturized hair has a soft texture and looks fuller. Most importantly, moisturizing protects your hair from damage and thinning.

If you are using a leave-in conditioner, that’s usually enough to moisturize your hair. If not, get a hair moisturizing cream, gel or spray.

5. Get a Volumizing Hair Cut

How your hair is cut can have a big effect on how full it appears. Work with your barber to decide the best style that flatters your face and adds the most volume to your hair.

Some ideas include side fades, layering, and side-swept hair cuts.

Blow Drying Adds Volume To Hair

Blow Drying Adds Volume To Hair

If you or your partner owns a hair dryer, that’s a great tool for adding volume to your hair. Depending on how much volume you want, you may not even need a ton of hair products.

If you’ve just washed your hair, pat it dry with a towel then add a volumizing product of your choice. We recommend using a volumizing mousse with heat protection.

With the blow dryer on the low or medium setting (depending on how healthy your hair is), run the blow dryer through your hair to dry it out. Use your fingers to lift your hair as you dry it.

Next, blow your hair in the opposite direction it naturally lies. You can use a wide toothed comb or paddle brush to push the hair to that side.

Lastly, turn the blow dryer to the cold setting and blow your hair in the normal direction, using a comb to style it. The cold air will lock your hair in that style and volume for longer.

The Best Volumizing Hair Products

If you want to increase your hair volume as much as you can, combine all the above steps (good hair care and blow drying) with the right hair products.

Mousse

The go-to product for adding volume to hair is mousse. It usually comes in the form of a light foam that coats the hair, giving it more volume, hold, and lift.

Mousse also has protective properties, which is why you should apply it before blow drying your hair.

Volumizing Powder

Another effective way to add volume to hair is volumizing powder also called texturizing powder.

Volumizing powder increases friction between individual hair strands, which adds more volume to your hair. It can also reduce oiliness in your hair, which prevents it from matting.

You only need a little volumizing powder to get results. Apply it where you want to add volume. For some styles, this can be the roots of the hair. But for most men, applying it to the middle and end of hair strands is enough to add lots of volume.

Sea Salt Spray

Another option is sea salt spray. It’s great for guys going for a tousled beach or surfer style look.

Sea salt spray adds volume and lift to hair, while also texturizing it to look like you’ve just spent a day at the beach.

Sea salt spray is also great for men with thin hair, as it does a great job thickening hair. If you have oily hair, sea salt spray absorbs it, which lightens and lifts your hair.

Other Volumizing Products

Other products you can try include volumizing hair spray, volumizing creams and gels, and volumizing mists.

We’ve already mentioned volumizing shampoos and conditioners.

Not every product will work as well as you expect. So you may need to try out a few of them until you find the one that works best for your hair.
